Steel Coil Securement & FMCSA Tie-Down Standards Manual

Engineering and regulatory reference for FMCSA 49 CFR § 393.120 coil securement, suicide vs shotgun orientation, coil rack cribbing, rubber friction mats, and Grade 70 chain WLL calculations.

50% Aggregate WLL Mandate

Federal law requires total tie-down Working Load Limit (WLL) to meet or exceed 50% of coil weight. Standard 3/8" Grade 70 transport chain provides 6,600 lbs WLL (direct tie-down counts for 50% or 3,300 lbs per end).

Suicide vs Shotgun Loading

Suicide loading (eye crosswise) creates extreme forward roll hazard under hard braking, requiring hardwood chocks, steel coil bunks, and cross-chains. Shotgun loading (eye lengthwise) prevents lateral roll.

Coil Rack & Friction Mats

Coils exceeding 5,000 lbs must be supported by certified steel coil racks and beveled hardwood cribbing. Neoprene friction mats significantly elevate friction coefficients, preventing transit walk.

FMCSA 49 CFR § 393.120 Coil Securement Matrix

Coil Weight Orientation Minimum Tie-Down Requirements Mandatory Blocking / Cribbing
< 5,000 lbs Eyes Crosswise / Lengthwise Standard general cargo rules (1 tie-down per 10 ft) Chocks or hardwood wedges attached to deck
> 5,000 lbs Eyes Crosswise (Suicide) At least 3 direct tie-downs (1 over top, 2 through eye) Certified coil bunks, rubber friction matting
> 20,000 lbs (Heavy Coil) Eyes Crosswise (Suicide) At least 4 to 6 direct Grade 70 chains through eye Dual beveled hardwood timbers + steel bunks
> 5,000 lbs Eyes Lengthwise (Shotgun) At least 3 direct tie-downs (diagonal opposing pull) Side cradle timbers preventing lateral roll
