Cryogenic NER & Hold Time Audit Manual
Pre-trip thermal efficiency auditing for MC-338 cryogenic bulk tankers: calculate Normal Evaporation Rate (NER), holding time limits, and vacuum degradation drift.

02 Holding Time & Evaporation Audit
✓ Meets DOT specification for MC-338 highway transit.
Exspeedite TMS alert automatically geo-routes driver if hold time < 6 hours remaining.
Federal Mandates on Holding Time: 49 CFR § 178.338-9
Federal Hazardous Materials Regulations mandate that every cryogenic liquid cargo tank must have an established One-Way Travel Time (OWTT) marked on its specification plate. The cargo tank cannot be offered for transportation if the estimated transit duration plus a 24-hour safety contingency exceeds the remaining holding time of the vessel.
Vacuum Annulus & Micron Creep
Cryogenic tanker vacuum is measured in microns of mercury (1 micron = 0.001 mm Hg). A brand new vessel operates at < 10 microns. Over years of thermal cycling, microscopic outgassing from perlite insulation causes vacuum creep. Once annular pressure exceeds 50 microns, heat conduction spikes exponentially, doubling the daily NER loss rate.
Automated Geo-Fenced Blow-Down Protocol
When a trailer is caught in traffic delays, winter blizzards, or rail intermodal holds, the holding time clock counts down continuously. Exspeedite monitors live IoT pressure gauges and triggers automatic diversion to certified industrial gas venting stations before road relief valves open in public areas.
Enterprise Cryogenic Fleet Telematics Integration
Exspeedite TMS provides the freight industry's only native holding-time dispatch validator. Dispatchers cannot assign a cryogenic load if the route transit time violates 49 CFR § 178.338-9 holding time margins, protecting carriers from catastrophic roadside hazardous gas venting incidents.
