Multi-Jurisdiction IFTA Fuel Tax Automation

Quarterly IFTA filing breaks when mileage and fuel purchases live in separate spreadsheets. Automation requires jurisdictional splits at the breadcrumb level, not at the ZIP code level.

Engineering Overview

EXSPEEDITE ingests ELD GPS trails, splits miles at state borders, reconciles Comdata/WEX/EFS fuel files, and exports audit-ready quarterly packages. Oregon Weight-Mile and other special taxes still require jurisdictional rules configured per operating authority.

Operational Workflow

Step 1

Ingest telematics breadcrumbs

Connect carrier-neutral ELD feeds so every loaded and empty mile streams into the tax engine with timestamps.

Step 2

Apply toll and non-taxable rules

Tag toll authority segments and non-taxable ferry or yard moves so they do not inflate taxable jurisdictional miles.

Step 3

Import bulk fuel purchases

Load fuel card files with product code, gallons, and purchase state for credit calculations.

Step 4

Reconcile MPG anomalies

Flag tractors whose effective MPG deviates from fleet norms to catch odometer gaps or device faults.

Step 5

Generate quarterly return workbook

Produce IFTA summary by jurisdiction with supporting mile and gallon detail for auditor review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are toll road miles taxable for IFTA?

Generally toll miles remain taxable for distance reporting unless your jurisdiction provides explicit exclusions. Configure toll segments separately for audit transparency.

How often should fuel files import?

Weekly imports catch card fraud early; minimum monthly before quarter close.

Can IFTA automation replace ELD compliance?

No. IFTA automation consumes ELD data; FMCSA HOS compliance remains on the certified ELD provider.

What about Kentucky KYU or New York HUT?

Separate weight-distance or highway use taxes require additional jurisdiction modules beyond standard IFTA mileage splits.
