HRCQ Nuclear Transport & Highway Routing Guide
Operational requirements for Highway Route Controlled Quantity (HRCQ) radioactive shipments: preferred interstate routing, mandatory urban bypasses, state governor advance notifications, and driver training certification.
01 Radioactive Shipment & Highway Profile
02 49 CFR § 397 Subpart D Compliance Profile
Interstate Preferred System
Carriers must operate exclusively over the Interstate System and designated state preferred routes. Drivers must use Interstate system bypasses or beltways to avoid congested urban centers whenever available (§ 397.101(b)).
Written Route Plan Mandate
The motor carrier must prepare a detailed written route plan and deliver a copy to both the driver and the shipper before departure. The plan must list all origin/destination points, route numbers, telephone numbers, and planned fuel stops.
24-Month Driver Training
Every driver operating an HRCQ load must have completed a specialized training program within the preceding 24 months covering radiation fundamentals, emergency procedures, route plan adherence, and vehicle shielding mechanics (§ 177.816).
Automate HRCQ Nuclear Route Planning & Governor Notification in Exspeedite TMS
Eliminate federal routing violations. Exspeedite auto-generates 49 CFR § 397 written route plans, verifies preferred Interstate corridors, tracks 24-month driver nuclear certificates, and manages pre-trip CVSA Level VI inspection logs.
