ISO Tank Depot Depressurization & Heel Recovery
Pre-washout safety protocols for intermodal ISO tank container depots: controlled closed-loop vapor venting, hazardous chemical heel extraction, LEL gas clearance, and entry permits.

02 Depot Safety Clearance Status
Zero residual pressure in vessel. Vapor header disconnected.
Vacuum suction wand with flame arrestor grounded to chassis.
Intermodal Container Depot Safety & Heel Management
When an ISO tank container completes discharge at an industrial customer facility, the vessel is rarely completely empty. A residual pool of liquid—termed the "heel" or "slop"—remains trapped beneath the siphon tube or behind internal baffles. Furthermore, solar heating on rail flatcars or marine container stacks can build 10 to 30 psi of toxic vapor pressure inside the sealed container.
Vapor Space Catastrophic Ejection Risk
If depot technicians attempt to unbolt the 500mm manhole dome cover without first venting through the top air line ball valve, the pressurized vapor will blow the heavy stainless lid open with explosive force, causing fatal head trauma or spraying toxic chemical mist across the wash bay. Depressurization to zero psig through an environmental scrubber is step zero.
Automated Slop Disposal Invoicing
Disposing of RCRA hazardous chemical heels costs depots between $4.00 and $12.00 per gallon in certified waste incineration fees. If a customer leaves an excessive 50-gallon heel, the depot incurs hundreds of dollars in unbudgeted processing costs. Exspeedite automatically converts heel pump-out volumes into pass-through customer accessorial invoices.
Enterprise ISO Tank Depot Operations in Exspeedite
Exspeedite TMS manages the complete lifecycle of ISO tank container depots: electronic gate EIR interchange, automated heel volume logging, nitrogen purge documentation, and digital Confined Space Entry (CSE) permit issuance directly to technician mobile tablets.
