Engineering Principles of Intermodal ISO Tank Transloading

International bulk chemical shippers import cargo inside 20ft ISO tank containers arriving at ocean port terminals or rail hubs. Because specialized chassis are scarce and daily container demurrage/per diem rates can exceed $150 to $250 per day, carriers transload the chemical into domestic DOT-407/412 tank trailers for regional delivery, returning the empty ISO container within the free time window.

Cavitation & Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH)

When pumping volatile or hot liquids from an ISO tank, liquid can vaporize in the pump suction line if the pressure drops below the fluid's vapor pressure. The resulting vapor bubbles implode violently against the pump impeller, causing severe mechanical damage (cavitation). Maintaining a minimum 5-foot margin between NPSHa and NPSHr is critical.

Sealless Mag-Drive vs. Mechanical Seals

Standard mechanical pump seals inevitably weep microscopic droplets of chemical product over time. For toxic, fuming, or hazardous chemicals, modern transload skids employ sealless magnetic-drive pumps. Neodymium rare-earth magnets transmit torque through a hermetically sealed containment shell, eliminating rotating mechanical seals and fugitive toxic emissions.

Enterprise Intermodal Transload Management in Exspeedite

Exspeedite TMS links ocean container tracking, rail billing 214 milestones, and transload terminal work orders into a unified operational dispatch board. When an ISO tank arrives at the transload depot, the system schedules the domestic receiving trailer, tracks product lot numbers, and monitors pumping completion in real time.
