LH2 Spherical Vessel & Thermal Parameters
Thermal Ingress & Boil-Off Telemetry HIGH THERMAL STABILITY
Latent Heat of Vaporization
LH2 boils at 20.28 K (-252.87°C) with an extremely low latent heat of vaporization of only 445.6 kJ/kg (compared to 2,257 kJ/kg for water). Even tiny heat leaks into the inner stainless pressure vessel cause immediate phase expansion of 1:848 from liquid to gas.
Vacuum Annulus & Perlite
Cryogenic spheres utilize a double-shell vessel with an evacuated interstitial space packed with expanded perlite or multi-layer insulation (MLI). If road vibrations cause vacuum loss above 50 microns, heat leak increases exponentially, requiring active vent mast management.
NFPA 2 & CGA H-3 Venting
During highway transport, pressure relief valves are configured in dual staggered setups (primary bursting disc + dual ASME Section VIII safety valves). Vent outlets must discharge vertically upward with velocity > 30 m/s to prevent ground-level hydrogen air flammable cloud formation (4% LEL).
