Liquid Oxygen (LOX) & Medical Gas Tanker Degreasing Audit
Eliminate explosive combustion hazards in pure liquid oxygen service. Validate solvent wash chemistry, non-volatile residue (NVR) limits, 365 nm ultraviolet fluorescence checks, and medical USP oxygen certifications.
01 Oxygen Compatibility & Catastrophic Combustion Prevention
Liquid Oxygen (LOX / UN 1073) is a cryogenic oxidizer that violently accelerates the combustion of any flammable material. When exposed to pure liquid oxygen, ordinary petroleum lubricants, machine oils, greases, or organic particulate matter will ignite spontaneously under slight mechanical impact, adiabatic compression, or friction. Even a microscopic hydrocarbon fingerprint left on an internal valve seat or pipe weld can trigger an explosive metal fire that incinerates stainless steel and aluminum trailer walls in milliseconds.
To prevent catastrophic transport fires, industry standards mandate that all trailers entering liquid oxygen service adhere to CGA G-4.1 (Cleaning Equipment for Oxygen Service) and ASTM G93 Level A. Tankers must undergo multi-stage chemical degreasing (aqueous alkaline detergent flushes, ultrasonic solvent cleaning, deionized water rinsing to neutral pH, and drying with certified oil-free nitrogen). Cleanliness is verified using solvent extraction for Non-Volatile Residue (NVR < 1 mg/ft²) and 365 nm ultraviolet blacklight illumination.
Hot aqueous alkaline flush at 160°F+ removes organic oils, followed by demineralized water rinse until conductivity matches influent water.
Inspecting internal baffles and valves under high-intensity ultraviolet light exposes fluorescent hydrocarbon films undetectable to naked eye.
Trailers dedicated to hospital medical gas delivery require FDA USP testing, particulate counts <25 particles >50 microns, and sealed discharge manifolds.

03 4-Stage Oxygen Service Degreasing & Certification Workflow
Circulate hot aqueous alkaline solution through rotating spray balls to strip oils, followed by triple deionized water rinse to neutral pH (6.5 to 7.5).
Darken wash bay completely. Technician conducts 100% surface scan with high-power UV-A lamp, inspecting internal welds and valve manifolds.
Blow dry vessel with certified oil-free gaseous nitrogen until discharge dew point reaches -60°F or lower, preventing ice crystals upon cryogenic fill.
Apply serialized green "CLEANED FOR OXYGEN SERVICE" tamper-evident seals to all manifold valves, uploading signed laboratory NVR report to Exspeedite.
