Non-Ferrous Rigging Hardware

Standard alloy steel shackles and wire rope generate iron micro-particulates and attract stray magnetic flux, distorting calibrated undulator permanent magnet arrays. Rigging mandates synthetic Dyneema slings and non-ferrous titanium or passivated 316L stainless hardware.

02

Mu-Metal Cryoperm EMF Shielding

Stray geomagnetic flux (> 500 mG) can freeze into superconducting niobium cavities during cool-down, causing residual surface resistance. Double-layer high-permeability nickel-iron mu-metal shields attenuate external fields to under 5 milligauss during crane handling.

03

Laser Tracker 3D Spatial Survey

Immediately after crane offload onto the laboratory test stand, laser trackers measure external spherically mounted retroreflectors (SMRs) to confirm the beamline axis remains aligned within ±25 microns of nominal design coordinates.

Standard Operating Procedure: National Laboratory Clean-Dock Transfer

1. Ante-Room Air Shower & Outer Barrier Decontamination

The specialized climate-controlled van reverses into the laboratory airlock dock. The airlock doors seal, initiating a 15-minute high-velocity HEPA air shower cycle. Certified cleanroom technicians clad in lint-free bunny suits perform isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes of the transport crate exterior.

2. Overhead Crane Dual-Pick & Inverted Air-Caster Transfer

Once inside the cleanroom high bay, the payload is hoisted utilizing a dual-hoist synchronized overhead bridge crane with variable frequency micro-inching drives (descent speed ≤ 0.2 m/min). For transit over epoxy cleanroom floors, inverted pneumatic air casters float the 10-ton cryomodule on a 0.1mm micro-thin air cushion, eliminating point-load wheel damage.

3. Receiving Inspection Witness Documentation

Laboratory lead cryogenics and beamline physicists inspect physical tamper seals, download continuous tri-axial shock data logs from on-board accelerometers, record N2 blanket pressure readings, and sign the official DOE/CERN Receiving Quality Release Certificate.
