Physics of Optical Overfill Prevention (Dynacheck Technology)

Scully optic sensors operate on the principle of total internal reflection. A pulsed infrared light-emitting diode (LED) transmits an optical beam down a borosilicate glass prism. When the prism is surrounded by vapor (dry tank), the 90-degree conical prism reflects the infrared light internally back to a phototransistor detector, generating a continuous 20 to 30 Hz pulsing return signal.

Liquid Refraction & Wet Sensor Tripping

When rising fuel touches the glass prism tip, the index of refraction shifts. Instead of reflecting internally, the infrared light escapes into the liquid petroleum. The phototransistor stops receiving the pulse, instantly cutting the permissive relay circuit in the rack Intellitrol monitor and halting fuel flow within 500 milliseconds.

2-Wire vs. 5-Wire Troubleshooting

In a 2-wire system, probes are wired in series. If any single sensor fails, gets blinded by diesel dye sludge, or suffers a wire break, the entire loop opens, making individual compartment troubleshooting difficult without a handheld test wand. In 5-wire systems, each compartment connects independently, allowing instant pinpointing of faulty sensors.

Eliminate Terminal Rack Rejections with Exspeedite

A single faulty overfill probe locks a fuel tanker out of wholesale terminals, wasting driver hours and triggering missed service penalties. Exspeedite tracks annual EPA Method 27 vapor tightness test dates, Scully probe replacement logs, and socket continuity checks in the Fleet Maintenance Hub.
