Vacuum Jacket Super-Insulation Manual
Technical inspection and shop rehabilitation protocols for MC-338 cryogenic annular spaces: diagnosing loss of vacuum, infrared frost spot audits, and turbomolecular pump restoration.
01 Annulus Diagnostic Parameters
02 Rehabilitation Plan & Duration
Vacuum above 50 µm causes convective heat leak across annular gap.
Physics of Cryogenic Vacuum Breakdown & Cold Spots
In a high-vacuum annular space, heat transfer by gaseous conduction is practically eliminated because the mean free path of residual gas molecules exceeds the distance between the inner vessel and outer shell. However, if the vacuum degrades toward 100 microns, molecular collisions begin to conduct atmospheric heat directly into the liquid product.
Frost Spot / Ice Ring Diagnosis
When internal perlite shifts during road vibration or MLI wraps tear away from support trunnions, direct metal-to-metal thermal shorts occur. These manifest on the exterior carbon steel shell as heavy condensation or solid rings of frost. A frosted shell indicates instantaneous loss of thermal insulation and requires immediate trailer quarantine.
Nitrogen Bakeout & Outgassing
Perlite contains billions of microscopic pores that hold trapped moisture. Mechanical pumping alone cannot extract this moisture without heat. Cryogenic maintenance shops circulate dry 250°F gaseous nitrogen through the inner vessel during pumping to accelerate water vaporization and achieve sub-10-micron vacuum.
Exspeedite Fleet Maintenance Hub: Specialized Cryo Tracking
Exspeedite TMS tracks annualized vacuum decay curves across each trailer in your cryogenic fleet. By predicting when a vessel will breach the 30-micron threshold, carriers can schedule vacuum pump-down during planned preventive maintenance intervals, preventing catastrophic mid-transit blowdowns.
