Sub-Zero Diesel Fuel Gelling & Cloud Point Manual

Engineering protocols for paraffin wax crystal suppression, #1/#2 ULSD winter blending ratios, Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) management, and anti-gel thermal defense down to -50°F.

CLOUD POINT VS CFPP

Phase Transition Thresholds

Standard #2 Diesel exhibits a Cloud Point (ASTM D2500) near +14°F (-10°C) where heavy paraffin wax molecules precipitate out of solution. The Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP, ASTM D6371) typically occurs 5°F to 10°F lower, completely clogging 10-micron fuel filters.

ULSD #1 KEROSENE BLEND

Viscosity & BTU Trade-Offs

Blending #1 Kerosene/Diesel drops the Cloud Point approximately 1.5°F for every 10% added. However, #1 diesel contains ~5% fewer BTUs per gallon and lower lubricity, requiring specialized cold-weather lubricity enhancers to prevent fuel injector pump wear.

HEAT TRACE & BLOCK HEATERS

Active Thermal Defenses

At temperatures below -30°F, chemical treatments alone are insufficient. Arctic rigs must deploy electric fuel filter blanket heaters, 12V fuel line heat trace tape, and 1,500W engine block heaters with smart duty-cycle controllers.

DISPATCH STATUS: COLD COMPLIANT. Fuel CFPP of -31°F provides a 6°F buffer below the forecast -25°F ambient. Recommend keeping fuel tank heated or idling during prolonged stops if wind gusts exceed 35 mph.

01. Anti-Gel Mixing Thermodynamics

  • • Pre-Crystallization Addition: Anti-gel additives are crystal modifiers, NOT de-icers. They MUST be introduced into the tank when fuel temperature is at least 15°F ABOVE the cloud point.
  • • Never Add to Gelled Fuel: If fuel has already gelled and filters are clogged, adding anti-gel will not melt the wax crystals. Requires emergency heating or isopropyl alcohol / solvent de-gel emergency rescue bottles.
  • • Water Separation Drainage: Drain water separators daily. Suspended water freezes at 32°F into microscopic ice slush that blinds filters long before fuel wax crystallizes.

02. Fleet Terminal Sub-Zero Prep

  • • Electric Receptacles: Ensure yard plug-in stanchions provide uninterrupted 120V/15A service for tractor block heaters and oil pan heating pads.
  • • Winter Front Grille Covers: Utilize vinyl winter fronts with adjustable zipper vents to maintain 180°F to 200°F engine operating coolant temperature while cruising at highway speeds in arctic winds.
  • • Exspeedite Preventive Work Orders: Schedule automated seasonal coolant refractions, fuel heater resistance tests, and battery load checks directly in Exspeedite TMS Maintenance Hub.
