250-Ton TBM Cutterhead Dual-Lane Transport Manual
Rigging and transit guidelines for 180 to 350+ metric ton Tunnel Boring Machine cutterheads and drive assemblies: dual-file 16-24 axle line hydraulic modular transporters, tandem crawler crane hook share, night-transit contraflow city routing, and bridge shoring.
01 TBM Dimension & Platform Configuration
Dual-Wide Side-by-Side Coupling
Standard single-file platform trailers lack the lateral stability polygon for a 12m-17m diameter circular cutterhead. Couplers mechanically join two parallel 3.0m trailers into a 6.2m wide platform, doubling transverse overturning resistance.
Tandem Crawler Crane Pick & Roll
Offloading at the deep launch shaft requires dual heavy crawler cranes (750t to 1000t class) sharing the load via engineered equalizer spreader beams, synchronized with radio telemetry load cells to prevent asymmetrical sling overloading.
Bridge Girder Straddling & Shoring
Crossing highway bridges with a 350-ton combination demands travel down the exact bridge centerline at 5 mph to equalize moment distribution between main support piers, preventing concentrated deck punching shear stresses.
Standard Operating Procedure: Metropolitan TBM Superload Moves
1. Midnight Rolling Roadblock & Contraflow Highway Routing
Due to the 20-foot transport width and 22-foot overhead height, transport is restricted to 00:00 - 05:00 hours under full police rolling closure. At designated freeway on-ramps and multi-lane intersections, the convoy utilizes wrong-way contraflow lanes to clear low-clearance highway overpass abutments.
2. Overhead Utility Wire & Signal Mast Swivel Coordination
A forward bucket truck crew precedes the convoy by 15 minutes, swinging traffic signal cantilever arms away from travel lanes and elevating municipal trolley bus or telephone lines with non-conductive lifting poles.
3. Sub-Surface Launch Shaft Gantry Hand-Off
Upon reaching the tunnel launch portal, the modular transporter positions directly under a 600-ton hydraulic gantry or twin strand jack tower system. Hydraulic center-hole jacks lift the cutterhead clear of the transport saddles, allowing the empty trailers to roll out prior to vertical lowering.
