Offshore Support Vessel Mezzanine Deck Seafastening & Wave Slam Audit
Structural engineering guidelines for mobilizing work-class ROV LARS assemblies onto offshore construction vessels, under-deck girder shear analysis, welded stopper dogs, and green water wave impact mitigations.
01 Offshore Support Vessel Structural Deck Integration & Under-Deck Stiffening
Mobilizing heavy subsea ROV launch systems (LARS) weighing up to 180 metric tons onto offshore support vessel (OSV) mezzanine decks imposes severe localized bending moments and horizontal shear loads. Vessel naval architects must evaluate existing deck transoms, longitudinal frames, and web frames directly beneath the LARS foundation footprint.
Under-Deck Pillar Stanchions
Where deck plating capacity is exceeded (> 5 t/m² nominal), temporary tubular stanchions (minimum 12" SCH 80) must be erected between decks to transfer loads to vessel bottom tank top structures.
Welded Shear Keys (Dogs)
High-strength structural steel shear dogs (ASTM A572 Grade 50) welded around the skid perimeter absorb horizontal sea dynamic inertia, preventing reliance on friction alone.
Dynamic Wave Slamming
Forward-facing LARS skids on open mezzanine decks are subject to green-water wave slap pressures exceeding 50 kPa. Forward deflector breakwaters must be installed.
02 Vessel Motion Dynamic Inertia & Seafastening Weld Calculator
Simulate vessel roll and pitch accelerations to determine total dynamic horizontal shear force, required welded shear dogs, and weld throat stress under extreme offshore sea states.
03 Marine Warranty Surveyor (MWS) Seafastening Sign-Off Sequence
Seafastening calculations, deck frame layouts, and welding procedure specifications (WPS) submitted to MWS prior to vessel arrival at quayside berth.
LARS placed on wooden or composite friction pads. Stopper dogs and doubler plates fitted against deck with root gaps checked (≤ 2 mm).
Post-weld visual (VT) followed by Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) of all critical stopper welds after 24-hour cooling.
Certificate of Approval (CoA) issued by attending MWS certifying vessel seaworthiness for offshore transit and DP2 deepwater operations.
