01 Toroidal Superconducting Coil Assembly & Vacuum Dewar Rigging

Terawatt-scale Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems are deployed at critical electrical grid substations and defense high-power facilities to provide instantaneous millisecond grid frequency damping and terawatt-level pulsed discharge. The 500-ton assembly consists of a monolithic toroidal coil wound from high-temperature superconductor (HTS) REBCO tape or low-temperature NbTi conductors, enclosed within a double-walled 304L stainless steel vacuum vessel.

Cold Mass Support Struts

Low thermal conductivity G-10 CR fiberglass-epoxy struts support the 320-ton cold mass within the outer vacuum shell, engineered for 1.5 G lateral transit loads.

Zero Residual Charge Lock

Coil leads must be solidly shorted with a copper grounding shunt bar; certified magnetometer surveys confirm zero residual current before releasing permits.

Schnabel Pivot Trunnions

The outer cryostat incorporates forged 4340 alloy trunnion lugs configured for direct pin-coupling into 36-axle heavy rail schnabel cars or dual highway dollies.

02 Cryogenic Boil-Off Preservation & Highway Quench Ducting

During the 5- to 10-day transit window between cleanroom manufacturing facilities and subterranean installation caverns, the cryostat is maintained under cold nitrogen or partial liquid helium pre-cooling. Highway transits require dual ASME burst discs and counterbalanced pressure relief stacks designed to discharge cold helium gas vertically without impacting escort vehicles.

Active Vacuum Ion Pumps

Self-contained auxiliary battery carts run turbomolecular and ion getter pumps to maintain insulation vacuum below 10⁻⁵ Torr across all transport modes.

Deflection Monitoring Laser Grid

Continuous optical laser displacement sensors monitor outer dewar shell deflection, automatically alerting the driver if mid-span sag exceeds 4.0 mm.
