01 SMES Gigajoule Quench Dynamics & Stray Field Simulator
Simulate stored magnetic energy dissipation, cryogenic helium vaporization rates, and required emergency vent duct diameter.
02 Quench Protection Heaters, Active Dump Resistors & 5-Gauss Perimeter
When a multi-gigajoule SMES magnet experiences a quench (a localized transition from superconducting to normal resistive state), the stored electromagnetic energy (\(E = \frac{1}{2} L I^2\)) must be dissipated within seconds. Fast-acting quench protection heaters drive the entire coil normal to distribute heat uniformly, while counter-wound energy extraction dump resistors absorb up to 85% of the electrical energy externally.
Burst Disc Overpressure
Reverse-buckling graphite or stainless burst discs rupture at 4.0 bar differential pressure, directing cold gaseous helium into vertical diffuser towers.
5-Gauss Public Perimeter
The 5-Gauss magnetic line must be marked with interlocked optical barriers during energization to prevent pacemakers or ferromagnetic items from entering.
Cold Mass Thermal Shock
Internal coil winding temperatures are mapped via fiber-optic distributed temperature sensors (DTS) to verify zero localized hot-spots above 200 K.
