1,100kV UHV Gas-Insulated Switchgear Transport Manual
Engineering protocols for mobilizing factory-assembled Ultra-High-Voltage (UHV) GIS circuit breaker bays, busbars, and disconnectors: tri-axial shock damping (≤ 1.5g), SF6/N2 micro-pressure blankets, and hydraulic platform transport.
Tri-Axial Dynamic Acceleration & Insulator Shock Damping
Inside high-voltage GIS enclosures, precision-cast conical epoxy resin insulators support massive copper/aluminum conductors under high dielectric stresses. Mechanical shocks during road transit can cause microscopic micro-fractures in the epoxy or dislodge internal shielding electrodes, leading to catastrophic partial discharge (PD) failure upon post-commissioning energization:
Vertical Axis (Z) Limit: ≤ 1.5g
Trailer air-ride or hydraulic suspension must maintain vertical peak acceleration below 1.5g. Speeds over bridge expansion joints or railway crossings must be limited to ≤ 8 km/h.
Lateral Axis (Y) Limit: ≤ 0.8g
Centrifugal acceleration during cornering is actively damped. Swept turns must not exceed 0.5 m/s² lateral force to prevent cantilever bending moment on porcelain or composite bushings.
Longitudinal Axis (X) Limit: ≤ 0.8g
Tractor braking is governed with progressive anti-lock brake systems (ABS). Harsh emergency stops (> 0.8g) trigger mandatory boroscopic ultrasonic inspection of breaker tulip contacts.
Transport Gas Blanket & Desiccant Moisture Management
While operational GIS equipment is pressurized with SF6 gas at 4.0 to 7.0 bar(g), international transport regulations (ADR / DOT Title 49 CFR) and OEM manufacturer protocols prohibit high-pressure road haulage. GIS shipping sections are vacuum-dried, filled with molecular sieve desiccant bags, and pre-charged under positive pressure:
Substation High-Bay Transload & Cleanroom Ingress
UHV GIS halls are pressurized Class 100,000 cleanroom environments to prevent airborne dust particles from entering open busbar flanges during installation coupling:
- • Airlock Decontamination Washing: Transport tarpaulins and trailer wheels are high-pressure washed and vacuum-cleaned inside the substation airlock vestibule prior to entering the main high-bay hall.
- • Overhead Crane Tandem Hoisting: Factory lifting trunnions are engaged with calibrated multi-leg wire rope slings and load-equalizing spreader beams. Flange blanking plates remain hermetically bolted until cleanroom dust tent erection.
- • Seismic Base Anchoring (IEEE 693): Bays are transferred onto precision slide rails and anchored to reinforced concrete foundations matching high-seismic performance levels (0.5g ZPA).
