CVSA ROADSIDE OUT-OF-SERVICE (OOS) DEFENSE

FMCSR 393 Chain & Binder Inspection

Pass Level I CVSA inspections. Inspect transport chains for link stretching, verify embossed manufacturer grade markings, audit ratchet binder pawls, and replace cracked edge protectors.

01

Chain Grade Markings

Chains without legible embossed markings (G7, G8, or G10) default to Grade 30 proof coil rating (1/3 the WLL), triggering an instant DOT tie-down deficit citation.

02

Stretched / Gouged Links

Any chain link showing greater than 10% diameter reduction from gouging, bending, twisting, or stretching must be cut and removed from flatbed service immediately.

03

Ratchet Pawl & Barrel

Inspect binder screw threads for stripping. Pawls must lock into teeth completely. Prohibit cheater pipes on lever binders due to severe driver recoil fractures.

04

Beveled Edge Armor

Steel coils have razor-sharp slit edges that crush chain links or shear straps. Heavy steel or molded polyurethane protectors distribute downforce across coil radiuses.
