1. ASME Section III Forged Metallurgy & Shell Saddle Protection

Factory-built Small Modular Reactor Pressure Vessels (fabricated from ASME SA-508 Grade 3 Class 1 vacuum-degassed low-alloy steel with internal 308L/309L austenitic stainless steel cladding) represent the primary fission containment boundary. Unlike site-assembled conventional gigawatt plants, SMR modules are transported fully integrated with internal steam generator helical tube bundles, core support barrels, and control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) housings.

BEARING CRADLE SADDLES 120° Included Arc Contact

Lined with 12mm virgin PTFE / neoprene elastomeric isolation pads to prevent local hoop stress concentrations exceeding 2,500 psi.

NOZZLE MACHINED SURFACES AISI 4140 Blind Flanges

O-ring sealed protective cover plates bolted with fluoropolymer-coated studs to maintain internal clean-room Class 10,000 environment.

During transit, thermal expansion and contraction cycles between day and night ambient temperature swings (-20°C to +45°C) require one fixed pivot saddle and one longitudinally slotted sliding saddle equipped with stainless steel polished wear plates and lubed graphite bronze inserts.

2. Multi-Modal Transport: 36-Axle Schnabel Rail to Dual-Lane SPMT

The standard delivery logistics chain for an SMR module incorporates three distinct phases: heavy marine barge from coastal or Great Lakes heavy manufacturing centers, mainline heavy-duty rail via specialized Schnabel cars, and final-mile over-the-road transport to the nuclear power generation island.

Phase A: Heavy Heavy Rail (36-Axle Schnabel Car)

The SMR vessel is suspended between two cantilever trusses of a 36-axle Schnabel railcar (such as WECX 800). The hydraulic suspension allows lateral shifting up to 14 inches and vertical lifting up to 12 inches on-the-fly to clear railroad wayside signals, rock cuts, and bridge superstructures under AAR Plate L clearance envelopes.

Phase B: Rail-to-Road Siding Transload (Hydraulic Gantry)

At the nearest heavy rail siding (typically 5 to 45 miles from the nuclear site), a 4-post 800-ton hydraulic lifting gantry jacks the vessel from the Schnabel cantilever shoes, allowing the railcar halves to separate. The vessel is lowered onto transport saddles mounted on dual-lane SPMT trailers.

Phase C: Final-Mile Highway Superload Convoy

Dual 12-axle or 16-axle SPMT lines configured side-by-side (dual-lane 20-ft wide stance) with hydraulic 3-point equalization distribute the 1.2M lb gross weight to under 22,000 lbs per axle line, satisfying state DOT bridge shear limitations.

3. Internal Component Dampening & Positive Pressure Nitrogen Blanket

Because SMR modules contain delicate internal steam generator tubes (hundreds of thin-walled Inconel 690 alloy tubes) and control rod guide mechanisms, mechanical shock and resonance during transit must be strictly mitigated:

LONGITUDINAL G-LIMIT: < 0.50 G Rail coupling buffers restricted to < 2 mph speed
LATERAL G-LIMIT: < 0.25 G Superelevated rail curve speed restricted to ≤ 15 mph
VERTICAL G-LIMIT: < 0.35 G SPMT hydraulic suspension absorbs road surface impact

Internal vessel atmosphere is purged with ultra-high purity dry nitrogen (N2 > 99.999%, dew point below -40°C) maintained at 5.0 to 8.0 psig positive pressure. Redundant dual N2 cylinder bottle racks with automated pressure regulators compensate for temperature changes and provide 21 days of continuous make-up supply during transit delays.

4. NRC 10 CFR Part 73 Physical Security & Escort Governance

Under Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations 10 CFR Part 73 and DOE Order 460.1D, transporting safety-significant nuclear steam supply system components requires stringent chain of custody and physical security protocols:

  • • Pre-Route Security Screening: Designated transport routes require pre-approval by NRC and relevant state radiological safety agencies with secondary contingency routes surveyed.
  • • Continuous Telemetry & Armed Escorts: Real-time encrypted satellite tracking (transmitting GNSS position, triaxial shock, cabin security cameras, and N2 pressure) with state police armed escorts front and rear.
  • • Secure Layover Facilities: Pre-identified, fenced, lighted safe havens at military bases or secure nuclear licensee facilities for any mandatory overnight rest periods.
