Subsea Umbilical Heavy Reel Spooling & Multi-Axle Transport Manual

Rigorous engineering manual for quayside and overland movement of continuous subsea umbilicals: powered reel drive systems (RDS), SPMT hydraulic axle line loading, dynamic cradle lashing, and ground bearing pressure limits.

Meters

02 Structural & Ground Bearing Telemetry STABILITY VERIFIED

Load Per Axle Line 17.8 MT / line Permitted limit ≤ 30.0 MT
Ground Pressure 4.85 t/m² Capacity: 7.50 t/m² (Safe)
Center of Gravity Height (Above Deck) 5.10 meters
Tipping Angle Threshold 14.2° (Margin: 11.2°)
Required Saddle Lashing Pre-Tension 185 kN per chain (4 corners)
Spooling Vessel Line Pull 42 MT Back-Tension

Configuration compliant with DNV-ST-N001 offshore transport standards. Ground bearing pressure well below quayside wharf capacity.

Hydraulic 3-Point Suspension

SPMT hydraulic circuits must be grouped into a 3-point or 4-point hydraulic suspension system to equalize individual axle loadings across uneven port road pavements, preventing single-axle overloading when crossing quay transition plates.

Cradle Saddle Dynamic Friction

High-friction Neoprene or EPDM isolation dunnage is mandatory between the cylindrical steel reel rims and the saddle chassis. Pre-tensioned 16 mm Grade 100 lashing chains counteract dynamic horizontal acceleration during crane spooling pull.

Vessel Spooling Synchronization

During offshore lay-vessel spooling, back-tension brakes maintain continuous 20 to 50 metric tons of line tension to prevent loose wraps. The transport trailer must remain dynamically ballasted to resist horizontal pulling vectors without creeping.

Offshore Umbilical Reel Load-Out & Marine Transfer Protocol

01

Pre-Move Core & Hydraulic Armor Inspection

Verify that internal high-pressure hydraulic steel tubes and electrical/optical fiber conductors maintain baseline helium leak test integrity (< 1x10−6 mbar·l/s) prior to trailer positioning.

02

Modular Transporter Deck Leveling & Hydraulic Stroke Verification

Ensure total available hydraulic cylinder stroke (±350 mm) has ≥ 150 mm upward and downward reserve margin to negotiate quay ramp gradients and storm drainage swales.

03

Tidal Quayside Edge Exclusion Zone Enforced

Maintain a minimum 2.5-meter standoff from unreinforced sheet-pile copings unless heavy steel load-spreading crane mats are deployed in accordance with port engineer soil boring logs.
